State Of The Love Address - 2004 Edition

My Fellow Lovers.

Today, and tonight, here in New York City, a place some consider to be one of the most romantic places on this planet, there is love.

As I went from place to place today, from river to shining river, there they were. The two-headed, four-legged creatures, hugging, caressing, laughing, yes, interdigitating... and of course, kissing.

Forget about being a voyeur. You couldn't help but see it today. In the streets, on the subway, and of course, in the candy shops and bodegas which had just doubled the price of their roses. And not just kissing. Audible kissing! The kind of kissing where it sounds like you opened a bottle of sparkling water.

This Valentine's Day has been especially love driven. I think I know why. The cold winter, the unease about the direction our country is going, the need for comfort and the fact that everyone seems to look great causes people to drift towards their partners even more.

And even my friends list isn't immune to such stuff... Both melodymuse and sweet_evil got engaged!! It's more than just coincidence. There's lots of love out there.

For some.

For the rest of us, well, we'll get by hearing all about your wonderful adventures in Cupid's Grove. I can't even say I'm unhappy about not having a valentine. Shockingly, I'm not. I'm actually very content. Somehow, I'm ok with it all. I never really had a valentine anyway. I mean a REAL valentine, the kind you might give a diamond ring to at some point in a relationship. Maybe I've come to accept my fate.

Looking back at last year's Valentine's Day address, I have to say I'm far less cynical about love than I was a year ago. That's worth something, I think. I can appreciate love and lovers for what they are... wonderful people who found a person they can connect with on many different levels.

Wow! Imagine someone you can have spectaular sex with, then you wind up cooking a meal together, and have sparkling conversation while you dine, followed by bathing, massage and more sex! It's a person who earns money and still has time to spend with you. And it's someone you can stand to look at for more than ten seconds at a stretch!

The dream lives.

I have to remain a little cynical. It's in my lifetime contract. Sorry about that. But, I'm smiling while I write it. Take that, Carrie Bradshaw and you other mythical New York women!

I wish you love. If you have it, may it grow beyond your wildest imaginings. If you don't, may you find it when you need it the most, and may it change your life in incredible and wonderful ways. And, if you're like me, may you find enjoyment in everyone else's happiness. That's what really matters!

As I sit here with my soul mate, each of us in our recliners on our own laptop PCs, I know I've found the kind of love you just wished us all.

I wish the same back at you! You deserve to find someone who "just fits" in every way. It's possible, I know. We're on year 11 of our marriage and we're still in love. The depth of our love increases with each experience of great sorrow and great joy. We still laugh ourselves to tears on a regular basis. We never run out of things to talk about.

That, my friend, is what I wish for you.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Even when the connections are made, it seems we are all still dreamers.

Spectacular sex? Had it. With rotten men.

Sparkling conversation? Only when we are talking about glitter and other shiny objects.

Looking at eachother for more than ten seconds requires more than waiting for the other person to blink an answer as to whether or not we should watch the channel we're on, or continue to other programming.

Such is the life in the stage of a multiple-year romance. Perhaps it's just us, perhaps it's just normal.

But know that you weren't alone today in witnessing those affectionate two-somes, thinking about what could be or what might be.

Re:
The trick is to find a person who fits all of the requirements, not just one or two.

I suppose relationships go through various levels, and it's not always perfect. But if both people are committed to each other and to trying to do your best, things can be forgiven.

You seem to have one of the more solid relationships I've seen, Carisa and you also have so many gifts to give! I can't imagine things being bad for very long!

You really are such a great person. I say it every day when I ready you - even if I don't always have time to respond.... you care more about your friends than anyone - and it's a great thing to see....

It's just a matter of time until the right person comes along, Dean...really! You are too all-around-neat for it not to happen.

One day your paths will intersect, and the rest will be history.

Who knows? Maybe even by this time next year...

Re:
Thanks Sandi!

I don't know if everyone gets to find that person. I don't know that it's part of everyone's experience. I used to believe that it could and should be, but I've become a bit more philosophical about it more recently.

I mean, I would prefer to be on my own than with someone that I wouldn't want to be with... and I wouldn't want to be with someone that I was making miserable. So, in the grand scheme, I'm already ahead!

But I'm staying open to any possibility. We'll see about next year! :o)

*laughing* THAT man is GREAT!!

And that is exactly right in my opinion, nothing or no one is better than the wrong person or a make due with the best I can get until something better comes along person. I think the acceptance of that is the biggest hurdle. I am there or almost there myself. Great entry Dean!

Thanks Raven! It took a while for me to figure out some things... a remedial case for sure. But better late than later!

Just keep in mind that when you get everything figured out.. there will be nothing left and it will be time to die. *grin* Good job.. but keep working at it all. ;)
